My four year old cousin, that I was babysitting brought our old Aladdin VHS tape to me, today and asked me to open it and put it in. She already had it open so I said, “It is” and she just went on and on “open it. Open it, Monica, open it!” It took me a while, but I realized that she asking me to actually open the VHS it’s self and bring out the DVD that she thought was inside. I was a little dumbfounded and surprised that this little girl didn’t know what a VHS was! I took the time to explain to her that no, that was it that was the movie she said “Thats it? Its just…..that?” I said yes and she just excepted it and moved on while I went to fix up our VCR (thats right, we still have one). I couldnt help thinking, here I am, an 18 year old (still super young mind you) and this four year old is more adjusted to the times than me. I’m hardly in the know with the latest technology, in all honesty, its far too confusing for me to deal with, so I just ask my dad to do it. Its amazing, though, cause if you think about it, VHS tapes are super simple. Film, cords, reels, and some plastic to encase and protect it all. Now we have things communicating just through the air. People talk from across the world, entire libraries are compacted to a tiny little electronic devise! Even now, I write this from my iPod Touch. It’s amazing how the world (Or, some of the world, I should say.) has accomplished SO MUCH in these past 18 years that it’s just a liiiiittle scary. Anyways, point is, I’m a super nostalgic person, and VHS tapes are frickin’ awesome.
